Linguistics Minor

The minor in linguistics will introduce students to key concepts that form the basis of modern generative linguistics.

Minor Requirements

Course requirements

A schedule of classes for the present and coming semester is available on Testudo. A minor in linguistics requires that you take at least five courses, satisfying these five requirements:

  1. LING 200 (“Introductory Linguistics”)
  2. LING 240 (“Grammar and Mind”)
  3. LING 311 (“Syntax”)
  4. LING 321 (“Phonology”)
  5. At least one upper-level linguistics elective

Notes

For an upper-level elective to count towards the minor, it must have a "LING" prefix, and it must be a regular "classroom" course. It cannot be an independent study, research assistantship, internship, etc.
  • There can only be six credits of overlap between a minor and a major.
  • No course with an earned grade below 'C' may count towards a minor.
  • Minors will be posted on a student's academic transcript but not on the diploma.

Declaring a linguistics minor

To decide whether you would like to have a minor in linguistics, please review:

  1. the Minor Requirements (above); and
  2. the linguistics curriculum on our webpage, especially our courses.

If after studying these resources, you would like to declare linguistics as a minor, please follow the instructions below.

Meet with the minor advisor

Go to the ARHU Minors website and request an appointment with the minor advisor through the site. To do this, click the "contact form" link for the linguistics minor, fill out the form and make sure to include times you are available for meeting in the "comments" section of the form.

You will then meet with the minor advisor to discuss the requirements of the minor and whether the minor is appropriate for you. During this meeting, you and the advisor will fill out the Roadmap for Linguistics Minors together.

Check your transcripts

After meeting with the minor advisor, double check that the linguistics minor shows up on your transcript (in Degree Navigator, etc.). (The minor will become official within the schedule adjustment period of any given semester.)

Be aware of the deadlines. In general, the minor must be declared at least one year prior to graduation.

Check before graduating

Near the end of your graduating semester, contact the minor advisor to make sure that everything is on track for the minor to be awarded (assuming successful completion of any courses you're currently taking). It is your responsibility to contact us one month prior to graduation to verify that you have completed the requirements.

Any time you email your advisor, please make sure to include all relevant information about the meeting, especially a list of times you are available to meet (during the five weekdays following your message date).
