Curriculum

The Linguistics Department offers courses on many aspects of the scientific study of language and an interdisciplinary major leading to a Bachelor of Arts.

Regular Courses

Our undergraduate courses in a typical year include at least those listed here. Other classes are offered in accord with student and faculty interests. The topics of LING 419 and LING 449 change each semester.

Course Requirements

Required courses for the major

Everyone majoring in linguistics takes the Linguistics Core (24 credits), plus courses that will satisfy the requirements of their track (15 further credits). The core consists of:

  1. LING 240, “Language and Mind”
  2. LING 311, “Syntax 1”
  3. LING 321, “Phonology 1”
  4. Any two of the following courses:
    • LING 312, “Syntax 2”
    • LING 320, “Phonetics”
    • LING 322, “Phonology 2”
    • LING 410, “Grammar and Meaning”
    • LING 440, “Grammars and Cognition”
    • LING 444, “Child Language Acquisition” 
  5. Any three upper-level linguistics electives (LING3/4xx)

Required courses for the minor

A minor in linguistics requires that you take at least these courses:

  1. LING 200, “Introduction to Linguistics”
  2. LING 240, “Language and Mind”
  3. LING 311, “Syntax”
  4. LING 321, “Phonology”
  5. At least one upper-level linguistics elective
