General Meeting - Colin Phillips / What’s the PIG deal?
Friday September 8, Colin Phillips kicks off the GM by revisiting the issues that he first engaged at the very start of his career, when Oasis and the Spice Girls ruled the airwaves: "Nearly 30 years ago I argued that 'the parser is the grammar'. This seemed provocative at the time. My advisors gently suggested that I would come to regret a slogan that invites a silly sounding acronym. So, how has it all worked out? A lot has happened since the mid-90s. What have we learned? Would I pose the question differently now? Do I even still care about the issue? The aim of this session is to tie together various strands of research, to illustrate how asking the same question can lead you in very different directions at different times." Or to put it somewhat differently: "Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you. And by now, you should've somehow realised what you gotta do. I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now."
