General Meeting - Mal Shah / Minds, meanings, and 'more'

Two classmates, a young woman and a young man, standing side-by-side, arms akimbo, smiling in front of a blackboard, wearing oddly similar outfits: beige pants a black pullover.

General Meeting - Mal Shah / Minds, meanings, and 'more'

Linguistics Friday, October 23, 2026 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm Marie Mount Hall, 1108B

Friday October 23, the General Meeting has Mal Shah, contextualizing his work on the mental representation of more and most.

I will present some recent within-individuals work (Shah et al. 2026), which finds consistency between different speakers in how comparative quantifiers like more and most interact with their number cognition. I'll put this finding in historical and philosophical context, with an eye to asking how meaning and psychology relate to one another. To capture generalizations about how different people represent comparative quantifiers, we need our theory to distinguish between logically equivalent functions, which, I argue, is best done by talking about meaning as mental representation.
