Language Science Lunch Talk - Mal Shah

Linguistics | Maryland Language Science Center Thursday, April 23, 2026 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm H.J. Patterson Hall, 2130

Join us for a Language Science Lunch Talk with Mal Shah (LING). Lunch will be served at 12:15 PM. Talk begins at 12:30 PM.

Is what you mean what you have in mind?

Abstract: "Linguists, psychologists, and philosophers disagree both between each other and among themselves about the most productive way to think about the meanings of words and sentences. In this talk, I discuss some work that engages questions about what meanings are, taking the perspective that meanings are some kind of mental representation. This includes joint work which connects issues questions about linguistic quantification with findings about number cognition, and (time permitting!) some more recent work about comparatives, which raises questions about how words and sentences relate to the world."
