LSLT - Philip Resnik / Reflections from a Computational Linguist

Linguistics Thursday, December 14, 2023 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm H.J. Patterson Hall, 2130

Thursday December 14, this semester's LSLT comes to a close with an "Upon Reflection" talk by Philip Resnik, who will reflect on the trajectory of his work in computational linguistics. In his words: "I've been slapped down publicly by Chomsky because he didn't think I was enough of a linguist. I've been slapped down by the guys who invented statistical machine translation because they thought I was too much of a linguist. All my degrees are in Computer Science, and I'm tenured in Linguistics. How did I get here, and where might I be headed? You want reflections? You'll get reflections."
