Meaning Meeting - Guillermo del Pinal / Free choice and presuppositional exhaustification

Linguistics | Philosophy Thursday, October 26, 2023 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm Marie Mount Hall, 3416J (Wimbledon)

Thursday October 26, the Meaning Meeting has Friday's Philosophy Colloquium speaker, Guillermo del Pinal from UMass Amherst, presenting an additional talk, co-authored with Uli Sauerland and Itai Bassi, on Free Choice and Presuppositional Exhaustification. An abstract follows.

Free choice and presupposition

I will present a 'Grammatical' theory of free choice effects (FC) based on the idea that covert exhaustication is a presupposition trigger. I will discuss various puzzles related to embedded FC effects - which together present a series challenge to extant theories of FC - and argue that this theory supports a surprisingly simple and uniform solution. The talk will be based on the paper 'Free choice and presuppositional exhaustification’, co-authored with Itai Bassi and Uli Sauerland.
