Outreach

The Maryland Department of Linguistics is active in outreach with local schools and families, and involved with national efforts to enrich education in the sciences

We maintain several avenues for community engagement.

  • We have often partnerned with local schools, hosting day-long visits by their students to our campus, or also visiting them to discuss language and linguistics. Our partnership with Northwood High School is described here.
  • We sometimes mentor high school students in research internships, if they are 18 or older. Some of them have won local and regional science fairs with their work, including Simon ChervenakAmina Iro and Uchenna Uzomah, and Susan Ojo.
  • We participate in science and engineering festivals, and advocate for linguistic issues in national education, including at the AAAS Family Science Days.
  • We introduce local families to linguistics at Maryland Day, a large annual festival celebrating the work of the university.
